Btw is there a reason you’re not using the Japanese names first and then show the translation in english? For example – Hokuto: Hyakuretsu-ken – Hokuto: 100 Crack Fist. I always thought that having the attacks written in Japanese conveys better what’s going on.

Also – Akashi’s original attack from the Sakigake manga was translated as “Rock-cutting straight-line style”, but his son’s attack you translated as “Stone-cutting”. Which one is more accurate, or maybe Akashi’s son has taken the technique to a new level, hence the stone>rock?

No, I believe it to be more professional to translate the attack names, because our readers are English-speakers and there shouldn’t really be a reason for Japanese to remain in there unless absolutely necessary. My opinion is that the English readers should have as close as possible to the same experience as the Japanese readers. With Hokuto we chose to keep the attack names in Japanese because those moves are a little more… abstract-sounding, I dunno. But with Otokojuku they’re often simple, self-explanatory, and sometimes a little silly

And I don’t know where you’re getting the “Stone-cutting” from… the first time Akashi says it, it says “Rock-slicing”.

And we’re not concerned at all with keeping things consistent with the current translation of the Sakigake manga. The guy who translated that was a sub-par translator and no one even bothered to check his translations, which is why we’re going to be redoing it eventually.

So the one i’ve read was Akashi senior’s “Stone-cutting” (even if it was inaccurate, from Ataru’s translation). For me, as a foreigner, having the attacks written in romaji has always been an exotic experience. It’s like “What the hell could this LONG-ass attack mean” reaction that i get (usually followed by a “WTF” because the attacks/explanations are really weird). Just sharing my opinion. Also i can’t believe that Miyashita came up with the Minmei Shobou publisher idea. I can’t w8 to see how that will unfold. I guess he’ll befriend Edajima, we’ll see.
