Could it be that the madness caused by the plant is also hereditary? think about it, after a while the common people will just react like most stories and just avoid the plan, and only the ones that are crazy will continue or even try to eat it, with that said, if you already know that the plant feeds on corpses then you would also take better care of them, like instead of burying them you cremate them.
