New HnG/HoM Chat Page
Hi everyone!
I just wanted to let you guys know, especially HoM members, that I’ve put up a primitive HnG/HoM Chat Page on the right for people to use until Robin and I set up some type of temporary forum for everyone. I decided to create this page to tide people over right now because my real work, Wimmo’s insane amount of translations, and my own preparations for an upcoming Easter break isn’t giving me much time to look into the forum issue at the moment. So go ahead, feel free to chat, send news, links etc etc.
EDIT: After posting the above, I received a few kind offers from different people volunteering to host a temporary HoM forum on their respective sites. I really appreciate what everyone is trying to do, but I personally don’t feel comfortable supporting or promoting another forum using the HoM name especially when we’re not entirely sure if HoM is really dead. If HoM is dead, I think it is only proper to ask SuperJ and the former HoM moderators to moderate any new forum that has the HoM slogan on it before we proceed. Therefore, I set up a temporary chat in order to facilitate the community, and have HoM mods like King of Ken tell us what they plan to do next. These things take time, so please be patient till we work something out.
In other news, I am also looking into creating a forum for HnG, which I would be happy to join with HoM if they so wished. I’m still looking into buying a site, so I would really appreciate it if people could email me regarding a good place to host the site, or give me some ideas as to where the HnG team can moderate their own temporary forum until we receive the funding needed for a permanent solution.
I managed to get in contact with SJ and he said;

Funimation has entered into a partnership with Toei and will be streaming their series, including Fist, and this partnership includes possibility of DVDs.
Possibly Toei shut down HoM because they are finally going to sell Fist in the west, and didn’t want HoM impacting profits?
well if that happens, expect a lame ass song at the beginning virtually no blood.
I dread to think what they would do to the movies….
I was once of the opinion that funimation geting hold of these titles would be a good thing but after seeing what they did with Dragonball and One piece I would rather they didn’t .
I think Manga Entertainment dubbed about 30 episodes way back when. Suffice to say I don’t think it caught on really well. And Kenshiro’s voice… he would never make me fear death like he should. Well, better than the live-action movie
@Wimmo: At least 4Kids didn’t get a hold of Fist of the North Star. And for good reason; you’d have to be retarded, high, and criminally insane to think that Fist of the North Star is, was, or will ever be for children. And suffice to say, if 4kids dubbed it, it would be unrecognizable.
At the moment funimation have all episodes 1-152 available for free viewing on their video site. Each episode can also be downloaded as a decent quality .FLV with english subs. Only catch is a short advert before each episode starts. They’re also promising to do the same with Galaxy Express 999 in the coming weeks.
BTW, to download the episodes I used firefox add-on DownloadHelper.
@SystematicChaos. 4kids did the english dub of Berserk, and that show is alot more graphic and even messed up at times than Fist of the North Star is (Berserk is definitely not something kids should watch). I did enjoy the english dub of Berserk though, it turned out very good. The english voiceovers of Berserk fit all the characters very well, but Fist of the North Star would most likely turn out horrible if it gets dubbed by 4kids.

@SystematicChaos – Well, technically Hokuto no Ken is a “shonen” manga, meaning that the target audience are young or adolescent boys (pre-teens and teens), so its not exactly an adult manga either. The problem is that its a pretty violent title by American standards (and perhaps modern Japanese standards as well), but the anime version is pretty toned down anyway.
Anyway, Funimation’s agreement with Toei so far only includes hosting subtitled episodes on their video site (the same ones featured in Direct2Drive and CrunchyRoll). They’re not dubbing the episodes in English or releasing them on DVD as far as I know.
I personally wouldn’t mind if Funi dubbed Hokuto no Ken as long as they don’t do something stupid like replacing the original soundtrack with inappropriate new music (like Manga did with the original Hokuto dub or Funi themselves did with DBZ and GT). I think they a pretty decent dub with the original Dragon Ball and that series is about as old as Hokuto is.

Yeah, I think I can conclude that I am the only here (and possibly on this planet) one who actually liked the eng dubs of HNK. I could go on forever about it but it will literally go on forever. And yes there were things that can get annoying but nothing to put me off completly from watching it.
About the music changing: Yes I suppose watching the Japanese version first and then watching it dubbed would make you think: “Why did you change the music?” But I think it’s good because it creates a different mood in a sense it felt like of a brutal in your face drum and bass (even with the intro as well). As compared to the original in which the music sets the mood as a superhero ready for action. Both were good. However. I am hoping that if they do dub all of HNK, that they do a good job of it.

Actually SpiritofHokuto20xx, you aren’t the only one who saw the English dub of both the HNK anime and anime movie before watchin the HoM subs!
I actually prefer watching HoM’s subs rather than watching the English Dubs, due to the fact the English VA’s voice acting were horrible to at times. Kenshiro and Shin’s (in the anime series) character weren’t all that bad, but the VA for most of the filler villans (Heart, Spade, etc) done a really half-ass job of delivering their lines. However the English dub of the HNK animated movie is actually pretty good, when compare to the anime series. The animated movie is a classic. I just wished they hired the same VAs from the animated movie for dubbing the anime series.
The music of the English dubb of the anime series is actually better than the VA’s voice acting, surprisingly enough. However I still prefer the music used in the original Japanese version.
In my opinion, the Streamline dub of the movie had good voice acting, but a bad localization, while the Manga Entertainment dub of the TV series had a decent localization, but bad dubbing.
The laughter in the theater when I first saw the Streamline dub was very embarrassing. Where Ken ‘healed’ Lyn

Oh on an SNK related note, 2 things (This might be common knowledge already but in case no else knew about it),

2) This is probably the only thing close in getting an OST of Souten No Ken (apart from the Op and Ed), it’s the mellow song that gets played every now and again. And I don’t know the name of the song so I just gave a name instead. It first gets played in episode 3 when Aya Kitaoji wakes up and wanted to see Kasumi Kenshiro again. (Sorry for the quality).

@Jonny2x4. Most of the voiceover actors do alot of 4kids voice acting too. For example, Guts, Caska, Juno, the guy that does the voice of Goku in DBZ, and almost everyone else in the dubbed version of Berserk do voiceacting for 4kids.
SpiritofHokuto20xx – Pretty much. Localization is the process of adapting a foreign work to another culture. To me, a good localization attempts to adapt everything that can’t be translated literally, while attempting to maintain faithfulness otherwise. The Streamline dub fails in that regard.
Dopefiend – Having the same group of voice actors has nothing to do with being dubbed by the same company. Most producers of dubbed anime don’t have in-house voice actors, but rather they rely on external agencies to get voice actors for their roles. 4Kids and Media Blasters just happen to both use NYAV (http://www.nyavpost.com/clients.html).
Kris Zimmerman, who directed the English voice acting in the Metal Gear Solid games, also directed the voice acting in some of the recent Scooby Doo DTVs. Does that mean Konami makes Scooby Doo movies? Of course not!
